John Ansbach is the former General Counsel of General Datatech, L.P. (“GDT”), a multinational technology solutions provider that supports commercial enterprises with cloud, unified communication, managed services, and networking, storage & compute solutions. As GC and an Executive Director of GDT, John was responsible for all of the legal affairs of the company, as well as supervising and directing the company’s international operations, internal audit and internal information security and IT efforts. John also lead the government relations and legislative efforts of GDT, and as such helped the company to monitor and impact legislative developments in Texas and across the Country pertaining to technology, intellectual property protection, tax treatment and other matters.
John is a seasoned business leader and attorney with a broad range of experience developed over more than 20 years of practicing law and helping to lead organizations. He began his career working as a litigator in courtrooms across Texas, but moved in-house to practice as business counsel in 2007. As a corporate generalist, his background includes experience in contracts; cyberlaw; intellectual property; real estate; human resources; corporate governance; regulatory and compliance; and, litigation. He’s also developed experience as a legislative advocate and technologist, advocating for GDT and its industry partners in areas relating to cloud and cybersecurity, the Internet of Things (IoT), tax policy and patent reform.
Prior to joining GDT, John served as the General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer for an administrative services company and as the General Counsel for a national nonprofit organization, both in Texas. Before going in-house, John worked as a trial lawyer for more than a decade representing plaintiffs and defendants in business, commercial and other civil litigation.
On the legislative front, John has previously served as the Legislative Director for a national trade association representing the interests of his clients in Washington, D.C., as well as in various state capitols. He was privileged to testify in that capacity before the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation; the Federal Trade Commission; and, numerous other state legislative committees.
Education and Training Summary
John is a cum laude graduate of Texas A&M University where he earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Economics and a minor in Speech Communications. He earned his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law in Austin. John has been licensed to practice law before the State Bar of Texas since 1996. He also earned his Certified Information Privacy Professional – US Private Sector (CIPP/US) accreditation in 2016.
When time permits, John speaks to organizations across the United States and Canada. His audiences have included Toyota, Frito Lay, Hewlett Packard, PepsiCo and others. He talks on topics related to cybersecurity, technology, the Cloud, the Internet of Things, diversity and leadership. John has also authored articles for a number of publications including Law Technology News; the Association of Corporate Counsel; the American Law Institute; and, The Texas Lawbook.
The Dallas Business Journal has honored John as one of its ‘Best Corporate Counsel’ in Dallas and included him in its Top 40 Under 40 list recognizing outstanding business leaders. He has also been awarded the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship and is an alum of Leadership Dallas, one of the premier leadership development programs in Texas.
John, his wife Cindy, who is a partner at Ansbach + Ghouse, PLLC, and their son Jackson live in the “M Streets” neighborhood in Dallas, Texas.
